The new Honey Brook No. 2 Birdcage Awl promises the same great feel and performance as the original, but with a slightly different but classic aesthetic. I created this handle design in response to a customer's specific request. The handle features a slightly wider bead behind the ferrule which some users might find provides some greater leverage.
The birdcage awl, used to start and ream holes, is an essential piece of a traditional hand tool woodworker's kit. I drew inspiration for the handles on the Honey Brook Birdcage Awl from classic vintage tools in my shop.
I designed the size and shape of the handle to maximize both comfort and control. Every hand I make is hand-turned to order with the use of CNC machines or lathe duplicators.
The Honey Brook No. 2 Birdcage Awl features:
- A hand-turned handle from your choice of premium domestic and exotic woods;
- A heat-treated steel blade and brass ferrule; and
- Traditional hand-mixed shellac followed by my own shop made hard wax.
After inspection, I hand-stamp each tool with my maker's mark prior to delivery. I stand behind every tool that leaves my shop with a simple unconditional guarantee. If you're not completely satisfied contact me for a replacement or full refund.
The Honey Brook No. 2 Birdcage Awl is a tool that will last a lifetime and you'll be proud to pass it on to the next generation of artisans in your family!

Beautiful example of a handmade tool with great attention to detail.
Thank you Charlie. I'm glad you're pleased with your awl. Happy woodworking!
I love purchasing beautiful handmade woodworking tools. There is something special in how the tool feels and performs in use. The Birdcage 2 awl you have provided is outstanding especially after working with you on a special wood species request. It was a pleasure. I’m sure there will be more orders in the future. Thanks again for a superb tool.
Thank you Richard! I'm getting caught up on a variety of things after being out of the shop recovering from surgery so I apologize for my delayed response. I'm glad I was able to locate this Masur birch to use for your awl. It is a beautiful wood and I'm never disappointed when I work with it. I hope you enjoy it for many years!
I enjoy buying tools from independent small businesses, because I feel more connected to the creative process when I understand a little about who produced my tool. My ebony birdcage no. 2 awl is gorgeous! Delicate, balanced and with such a velvet like feel in my hand. I could not ask for a better execution; the fit and finish is flawless. I could not be more pleased. Thank you!
